Tubulars have won more top cyclocross races than any other system. Year after year they dominate podiums across the globe. But with improvements in TLR systems and wider availability of handmade Challenge TLR tires with world-class SMARTsoft rubber and TE cotton casings, TLR is becoming a very strong choice for reaching the top step.
Cyclocross is a racing sport – and anyone that competes knows that what works for the pro teams and mechanics may not be viable for the privateer. Unsupported racers factor in cost, transporting equipment and long-term ease of use when picking a tire.
So which system is best? Honestly we don't know – only you can decide! Thankfully we offer 7 cyclocross treads in up to 3 casing materials, so you'll definitely find a few favorites.
TUBULAR TIRES
Why we love them:
Ride Feel – The round construction follows terrain at any angle, giving unmatched traction and comfort
Security – Won't burp or come off the rim at low pressures
Drawbacks:
Logistics – Difficult to change treads quickly, so multiple wheelsets with pre-mounted tires are the norm
Repair – Depending on your commitment to repairing tubulars, they can be a bit more "one and done" if the tube is damaged
TUBLESS READY (TLR) TIRES
Why we love them:
Ease of Use – Maintaining tubulars becomes simple with practice, but TLR is easier still for most riders
Lower System Cost – Changing tires on race day without a second (or third!) wheelset is more realistic
Repair – a TLR/Sealant system can be simpler to repair/refresh at home after a puncture
Drawbacks:
Ride Feel – Simply not quite as secure or sensitive as Tubular models
